Introduction
A torn sail, split canvas cover or damaged piece of boat fabric rarely happens at a convenient time.
You may be offshore with a small tear in a Dacron sail, alongside with a damaged sail cover, or halfway through a trip when a Sunbrella panel starts to split. The obvious temptation is to reach for whatever tape, adhesive or sewing equipment happens to be aboard and make the damage disappear.
Sometimes that is exactly the right thing to do. Sometimes it is a useful temporary repair. And sometimes using the wrong material — or adding stitching simply because you have a needle — can make the problem worse.
The trouble is, there is no single best boat fabric repair product. Lightweight nylon spinnaker cloth, conventional Dacron sailcloth, Sunbrella and heavy canvas all behave differently. A small tear in the middle of a panel is also a very different problem from damage around a reef point, clew, seam or attachment.

These aren’t simply eight different versions of the same thing. Each one has a different job, and the right choice depends on what you’re repairing, where the damage is and what you need the repair to achieve.
What to Look For When Repairing Boat Fabric
A torn sail doesn’t necessarily mean you need to reach for the nearest roll of tape. The right repair depends on what has been damaged, where it is, how much load that part normally carries and whether you need a temporary repair to get you home or something that can stay in place.
The same applies to canvas covers, Sunbrella and other fabric around the boat. A small tear in the middle of a sound panel is one thing; a tear at a seam, attachment point or other loaded area is something else.
There are also times when the best immediate response is not to repair the damage at all. Reducing the load on the damaged area, or taking the item out of use, can prevent a small problem becoming a much bigger one.
The more load the damaged area carries, the less we should rely on adhesive alone.
Temporary Repair or Proper Repair?
The first question is what you are actually trying to achieve.
A small tear discovered while you’re away from home may only need to be contained until you can get the item somewhere suitable for a proper repair. Sail-repair tape or an adhesive patch can be very useful for relatively small damage in otherwise sound fabric.
A proper repair is different. Significant damage, particularly around areas carrying high loads, may need a proper patch and stitching rather than simply being covered with adhesive.
The useful distinction is between stopping the damage getting worse and actually repairing it.
That doesn’t mean every taped repair is just a get-you-home measure. On suitable fabric, in a suitable location and with the right preparation, an adhesive repair can be durable. What matters is whether the repair is being asked to do the job the material and construction can reasonably support.
Reduce the Load Before You Repair Anything
If something has torn, don’t automatically assume that the first job is to repair it while it is still working hard.
If practical, reduce the load on the damaged area first. A mainsail with damage near its foot, for example, might be better reefed so that the damaged section is taken out of use, provided the conditions and the particular sail make that sensible.
Similarly, a damaged headsail may be better eased, blanketed, lowered or replaced rather than left flogging while you work out how to repair it.
The principle is simple:
If you can stop the damaged area being loaded, do that before trying to repair it.
Sometimes reducing sail, changing sails or even motoring home is a much better immediate solution than relying on a patch while the sail continues to work hard.
The same principle applies to canvas and other fabric. If a cover or enclosure can be taken down before you repair it, doing so usually makes the repair easier and avoids putting unnecessary load on the damaged area.
Location Matters as Much as Size
A small hole is not necessarily a small repair problem.
The same size tear can need very different treatment depending on where it occurs.
Middle of a Sound Panel
Away from seams, corners, reef points, cringles, attachment points, reinforced areas and other obvious load paths, this is usually the simplest sort of repair.
For small damage, an adhesive repair may be entirely appropriate, provided the surrounding fabric is sound and the repair material is suitable for it.
At or Alongside a Seam
The problem is no longer just a hole in the fabric. The construction of the item has been compromised, so stitching becomes much more important.
If the fabric itself is still sound and it is simply the stitching that has failed, re-stitching may be all that is required. If the fabric has torn through the seam as well, the repair becomes more involved.
Near a Reinforced or Load-Bearing Area
Reef points, cringles, clews, tacks, heads, webbing attachments, corners and major fastenings are all examples of places where the repair may need to restore or support the structure rather than simply cover the visible damage.
The same principle applies to a heavily loaded webbing attachment or a seam that is carrying significant tension on a cover or enclosure.
Major Damage in a Highly Loaded Area
This is where the advice changes fundamentally.
The priority may be to reduce or remove the load, contain the damage temporarily, stop using the item if necessary, and arrange a proper repair.
We shouldn’t try to find a product that allows us to say “stick this over it and carry on” when the underlying construction has failed.
Tape, Adhesive Patch or Needle and Palm?
Once the sail is under control, look at what has actually failed before deciding what to use.
Tape is useful for small tears, pinholes and relatively low-load damage, particularly when you need a quick repair while away from home. For some repairs, applying material to both sides can provide additional support.
A larger adhesive patch can give you more material around the damaged area, but it is still fundamentally an adhesive repair.
Stitching provides mechanical reinforcement and becomes more appropriate when a repair needs to withstand repeated loading or when you’re securing a proper piece of sailcloth.
That doesn’t mean stitching is automatically better. Every needle hole is another hole in the sail, so there is little point in perforating sound cloth simply because you have the equipment to do it.
The useful question isn’t which material is strongest. It’s what is actually holding the repair together.
PSP tape and Tear-Aid rely on adhesive. Spare sailcloth that is simply stuck over the damage still relies on adhesive. A properly sized fabric patch that is mechanically secured with suitable stitching becomes part of the repaired construction.
That’s a fundamentally different repair.
The same repair material can therefore have a very different role depending on what you are repairing and where the damage is.
Match the Repair Material to the Fabric
The products in this guide aren’t interchangeable versions of the same thing.
For small, straightforward damage in a sound, low-load area of a Dacron sail, PSP Heavy Duty Sail Repair Tape is the natural first adhesive choice.
For lightweight nylon spinnaker and gennaker cloth, PSP SPI has a more specific role because its lightweight construction is intended to suit lightweight sailcloth.
For Sunbrella, marine acrylic, canvas and other compatible fabrics, Tear-Aid Type A becomes the more natural general-purpose option.
Tear-Aid can also be useful on Dacron when the damage is awkward or a sail-specific tape isn’t the most practical choice. That doesn’t make it a stronger version of PSP Heavy Duty; its advantage is its versatility across different materials.
There are also different types of Tear-Aid. Type A is intended for fabric and other non-vinyl materials; Type B is the version for vinyl and PVC.
Spare Fabric Is a Different Kind of Repair
If you have suitable spare fabric, don’t think of it as just another thing to stick over a hole.
Its real advantage comes when it’s used as a properly sized patch and mechanically secured with appropriate stitching.
The fabric then becomes part of the repaired sail rather than simply giving the adhesive something else to stick to.
That can produce a much more substantial onboard repair, particularly where the damage has to withstand repeated loading.
Prepare the Repair Properly
With adhesive repairs, preparation matters.
The surface needs to be clean and dry, with salt, dirt and other contamination removed before you apply the tape or patch.
For a typical white Dacron sail, a sensible approach is to remove salt and dirt, let the cloth dry thoroughly, then prepare the bonding area according to the repair material manufacturer’s instructions. Alcohol-based preparation is specifically recommended for Tear-Aid, while PSP’s instructions call for a clean, dry surface free from dust and grease. If the sail has a coating, finish or unusual construction, be particularly careful before using any solvent.
Get the edges of the tear sitting naturally together before covering them, and deal with any loose or badly frayed fibres so they don’t interfere with the repair.
Give the adhesive plenty of sound material to grip. A patch should extend well beyond the damaged area rather than ending immediately alongside the tear.
If you’re cutting your own adhesive patch, rounded corners are preferable to square ones, because they’re less likely to catch and start lifting.
For a more substantial adhesive repair, putting material on both sides can provide additional support. Press the repair down firmly and evenly rather than just sticking it in place and assuming the job is done.
If you’re sewing, use an appropriate needle and thread for the material and avoid creating unnecessary holes in sound cloth.
Don’t Make the Repair Worse
There’s another question worth asking before you start:
Why did the sail tear?
Chafe, a sharp fitting, a failed seam, UV-degraded cloth or an existing damaged area may still be there after you’ve covered the hole.
Repairing the symptom without dealing with the cause can simply lead to another failure.
And if you’re working through several layers of sailcloth, don’t be tempted to force a large needle through just because it’s the one in your kit. If stitching is appropriate but the material is difficult to penetrate, use the smallest practical way of making the initial hole rather than creating unnecessarily large holes through the sail.
It’s Not Just Sails
The equipment used for sail repair can be useful for much more than sails.
Boats contain a surprising amount of fabric and heavy textile material that eventually needs repairing or reinforcing: sail bags, sprayhoods, dodgers, bimini fabric, tonneau covers, narrowboat cratch covers, canvas bags, cushions, awnings and webbing.
A sailmaker’s palm is essentially a tool for helping you push a needle through heavy material, so it can be just as useful when you’re repairing a canvas cover on a motorboat or a cratch cover on a narrowboat.
Good waxed twine has uses well beyond sailmaking too, from rope whipping to small canvas repairs and general securing jobs.
The point isn’t that every boat owner needs a complete sailmaker’s workshop. A few good repair tools can become useful general-purpose equipment once they’re aboard.

Know When the Damage Needs a Sailmaker
DIY sail repair has its place, particularly when you’re dealing with a small tear in otherwise sound sailcloth.
Be particularly cautious with damage involving:
- the clew, tack or head;
- the luff or leech;
- seams;
- reef points and other reinforcement;
- batten pockets;
- webbing or structural attachments;
- large or spreading tears;
- badly UV-degraded cloth;
- areas that have already been repaired and have failed again.
The useful question is:
Are you repairing a hole in the sailcloth, or are you repairing part of the sail’s structure?
If your damage is structural, a temporary patch may help you get the sail somewhere safe, but it’s usually time to involve a sailmaker rather than trying to repair the structure yourself.

Can Tear-Aid be used on a Dacron sail?
Tear-Aid Type A can be used on clean Dacron for small, low-load damage. That’s very different from repairing damage around a reef point, corner or attachment.
Can spinnaker tape be used on Dacron?
It isn’t the normal first choice for Dacron, but it can be a useful temporary fallback for limited, low-load damage when proper Dacron sail-repair tape isn’t available.
Should I stitch a taped sail repair?
Not automatically. If a properly applied tape repair is already adequate for a small, low-load tear, stitching may add unnecessary holes. It becomes more useful when it restores a failed seam or provides mechanical reinforcement.
Is Tear-Aid Type A suitable for Sunbrella?
Type A is intended for compatible fabric and is commonly used on canvas and Sunbrella. Proper preparation matters, and a reinforced sewn patch may still be preferable where the area carries significant load.

For a cruising boat, that’s quite useful. You aren’t carrying a product that only has one possible job.

We’d regard PSP Heavy Duty as particularly well suited to:
- small and moderate tears in conventional Dacron sailcloth;
- low- to moderate-load sail repairs;
- sail covers and sail bags;
- sprayhoods and biminis;
- heavier canvas and marine fabrics;
- chafe and wear protection.
On a sound Dacron sail panel, it is the natural choice between the two PSP tapes in this guide. SPI is intended for lightweight nylon; Heavy Duty is the more substantial option for conventional cruising sails and heavier fabrics.
It isn’t simply a case of one being stronger than the other. The two tapes are built around different materials and different repair jobs.
Where We’d Be More Cautious
Heavy Duty shouldn’t be regarded as a way of reconstructing the original structure of a heavily loaded part of a sail.
If serious damage occurs in a loaded area, the tape can still be extremely useful. It may contain the damage and help you get the sail somewhere safe, but that isn’t the same thing as restoring the original load path.
That distinction matters around reef points, cringles, clews, tacks, heads, heavily loaded seams and other structural areas.
There’s also a difference between how much load an adhesive repair can take initially and how it behaves when that load is applied repeatedly. An adhesive patch may cope perfectly well with a substantial load and then gradually creep or begin to lift when it is continually being worked.
That helps explain why product descriptions and more cautious sail-repair advice can sometimes appear to disagree. Heavy Duty can be a very capable repair tape without being equivalent to a properly constructed structural sail repair.
What About Lightweight Sails?
This is where we’d choose PSP SPI instead.
Spinnaker and gennaker nylon is much lighter and more flexible than conventional Dacron. Putting a substantial Heavy Duty patch onto it can add more stiffness and weight than you really want.
For us, the distinction is fairly straightforward:
Dacron cruising sail → PSP Heavy Duty
Lightweight nylon spinnaker or gennaker → PSP SPI
Major structural damage → either tape may help contain the damage, but neither should be regarded as the finished repair
That is more useful than simply asking which tape is strongest.
Where We’d Use It
We’d be happy carrying PSP Heavy Duty as a general-purpose heavy-fabric repair product, not just as sail tape.
A tear in a Dacron sail, damage to a sail cover or a split in a canvas cover are all the sort of jobs where it makes sense to have a roll within reach.
It’s also something we’d want aboard when the damage is more serious. A piece of tape that can hold things together long enough to reduce sail, get back to harbour or reach a sailmaker can be extremely useful, even when everyone knows it isn’t the finished repair.
Our Verdict
PSP Heavy Duty earns its place because it is a substantial woven repair tape that can do several useful jobs aboard.
For conventional Dacron sails and heavier marine fabrics, we’d choose it over PSP SPI. For lightweight nylon, we’d go the other way and carry SPI.
Used on sound material in a relatively low- or moderate-load area, Heavy Duty can provide a strong and potentially long-lasting repair when properly applied. Once the damaged area becomes part of the sail’s structure, however, the tape should be regarded as a way of containing the problem rather than recreating the original construction.
That makes it a particularly useful product for a cruising boat: capable enough to deal with ordinary damage, versatile enough to use on other heavy fabrics, and useful as an emergency measure when something more serious goes wrong.

What Makes It Different
SPI’s biggest advantage is how light and unobtrusive the repair remains.
On lightweight nylon, a substantial patch can make the repaired area disproportionately stiff or heavy. SPI provides reinforcement while retaining much more of the flexibility of the original cloth.
It is also convenient aboard. A small roll takes up little space and can be cut and applied quickly without getting out a palm, needles and thread.
For a spinnaker or gennaker that develops a small tear during a passage, that can be particularly useful.
Where It Works Best
We’d choose SPI primarily for:
- small tears in nylon spinnakers and gennakers;
- punctures and minor panel damage;
- relatively low-load areas;
- minor chafe;
- temporary repairs during a passage;
- lightweight nylon sail bags and similar equipment.
The lightweight construction is an advantage precisely because the material being repaired is lightweight too.
For a conventional Dacron cruising sail, we’d choose PSP Heavy Duty instead.
Where We’d Be More Cautious
SPI isn’t intended to turn a damaged structural part of a sail back into its original construction.
A small tear in the middle of a nylon spinnaker panel is very different from damage around a clew, tack, head, luff, leech, seam or other reinforced area.
In those situations, SPI may still have value as an emergency or containment repair, but we wouldn’t regard it as the finished structural repair.
Repeated flogging and sustained loading are also where adhesive repairs become less dependable. A repair that performs well on a lightly loaded panel may deteriorate much sooner when subjected to continual movement and load.
What About Dacron?
This is the important distinction when choosing between PSP’s two sail tapes.
We wouldn’t choose SPI as our general-purpose tape for a boat with conventional Dacron sails.
There are reports of SPI being used successfully for small Dacron repairs, but that isn’t the job for which it is intended, and adhesion can be less dependable on the heavier, textured woven polyester.
That’s not a criticism of the product. It is simply a case of using the repair material that best matches the fabric.
If your boat has conventional Dacron mainsails and genoas, PSP Heavy Duty is the more appropriate tape.
If you carry a lightweight nylon spinnaker or gennaker, SPI has a much clearer role.

The distinction isn’t simply that Heavy Duty is “stronger”.
SPI is lighter because lightweight nylon benefits from a lightweight repair. Heavy Duty is more substantial because Dacron and heavier marine fabrics can accept a more substantial repair material.

PSP Repair Tape SPI is a specialist repair tape for lightweight nylon sailcloth, and within that role it makes a lot of sense.
Its low weight, flexibility and ease of application are genuine advantages for spinnakers and gennakers, particularly when you need to make a quick onboard repair without materially changing the character of the sail.

Tear-Aid Type A is a clear, flexible adhesive repair material for fabric and other non-vinyl materials.
Unlike PSP SPI and Heavy Duty, it isn’t a specialist sail-repair tape. Its attraction is its breadth of use: Type A can be used on suitable Dacron, nylon, canvas and marine acrylic fabrics such as Sunbrella.
The kit we’re reviewing contains a 75 × 305 mm main patch, two smaller pre-cut patches, reinforcement filament for tears reaching an edge, alcohol preparation pads and scissors.
That makes it particularly useful in an onboard repair locker where you don’t know what is going to need fixing next.
One important distinction before buying: Type A is for fabric and non-vinyl materials. Type B is the version intended for vinyl and PVC.
What Makes It Different
Tear-Aid’s biggest advantage is versatility rather than specialisation.
PSP SPI has a clear role on lightweight nylon. PSP Heavy Duty is the more substantial choice for Dacron and heavier marine fabrics. Tear-Aid can move between those applications and a much wider range of boat fabrics.

- suitable low-load fabric repairs around the boat.
There is encouraging evidence for properly prepared repairs on Sunbrella and similar fabrics, although the evidence isn’t completely consistent. Sailrite recommends Tear-Aid as a no-sew repair option for Sunbrella, while independent testing by Practical Sailor found a Sunbrella repair that failed under testing.
We therefore wouldn’t describe Tear-Aid as universally superior to a sewn canvas repair. Its strength is that it provides a useful repair option without sewing, particularly when the surrounding fabric is sound and the load is modest.
What About Sails?
Type A is also a credible option for small or moderate tears in suitable Dacron or nylon sailcloth, particularly away from major load paths.
For Dacron, however, PSP Heavy Duty is the more obvious specialist product. For lightweight nylon spinnaker and gennaker cloth, PSP SPI has the more specific role.
That doesn’t make Tear-Aid unsuitable. Its advantage is versatility, rather than being the optimum specialist product for every sail.
Where a tear involves a reefing point, cringle, clew, tack, head, luff, leech, heavily loaded seam or another structural area, we’d regard an adhesive repair as containment or an emergency measure rather than assuming it has restored the sail’s original construction.
The Kit Is Particularly Useful
We like the kit format.
The main piece provides enough material for a substantial patch, while the smaller patches are convenient for minor damage. The reinforcement filament is useful where a tear reaches an edge, and the preparation pads and scissors make the kit reasonably self-contained.
For a general-purpose boat repair locker, that’s a useful combination. If you regularly repair canvas, buying Tear-Aid separately in larger quantities may make more sense, but for occasional onboard repairs the kit is a convenient format.
Where We’d Draw the Line

Its main attraction is bringing a confirmed Wm. Smith & Son sailmaker’s palm together with assorted needles, twine, wax and a simple ropework tool. Those components can be useful for far more than sails: canvas covers, sail bags, webbing, rope whipping and the many small repairs that inevitably appear aboard a boat.
If you’re starting from scratch, that convenience is valuable.

The best boat fabric repair product is not necessarily the strongest tape, the most expensive sewing tool or the product with the longest list of claimed uses.
It is the one that matches the material, the location of the damage and the job you actually need the repair to do.
A small tear in the middle of a Dacron sail might be an excellent job for PSP Heavy Duty. A lightweight nylon spinnaker is better suited to SPI. Tear-Aid Type A makes more sense when you want one adhesive repair product that can move between sails, Sunbrella, canvas and other fabrics. A proper palm, suitable needles and thread give you a different capability altogether: the ability to restore construction with a sewn repair.
And sometimes the right answer is to use none of them immediately.
If you can safely take the damaged area out of service, that may be the best temporary solution. If the damage affects a clew, tack, head, reef point, seam or other structural part of a sail, an adhesive patch may help you contain the problem and get somewhere safe, but that doesn’t mean it has restored the original structure.
That is really the point of carrying repair equipment aboard.
You are not trying to carry everything a sailmaker could possibly need. You are trying to carry enough to make a sensible decision when something inevitably goes wrong.
