Stop Looking for the “Best” Grease

A trailer wheel bearing, a battery terminal, a hatch seal and a stainless steel bolt all have completely different maintenance requirements, so it shouldn’t be surprising that they don’t all use the same product.

That’s why “What’s the best marine grease?” is only half the question.

Which Boat Lubricant Does What?

Marine Grease

If you only buy one lubricant for your boat, make it a good-quality waterproof marine grease.

It’s the general-purpose lubricant used on the majority of moving metal components around a boat, protecting against water and corrosion while reducing wear. Hinges, pivots, bearings, steering linkages and seacocks are all typical examples.

For most boat owners, this will be the lubricant they use more than any other.

PTFE Grease

PTFE grease combines conventional grease with tiny particles of PTFE, a very low-friction material that many people will recognise from PTFE thread sealing tape used on plumbing fittings. While the tape is used to seal threaded joints, PTFE grease uses the same low-friction properties to help moving parts slide more easily.

It’s a good choice when smooth operation matters more than maximum load carrying ability.

Dry PTFE Spray

Dry PTFE spray also uses PTFE, but works very differently.

Instead of leaving behind a layer of grease, it dries to leave a thin, low-friction coating that doesn’t attract dirt or dust. That’s why it’s often a better choice for locks, catches, sliding tracks and other mechanisms that would quickly become clogged if they were coated in grease.

Whenever you find yourself thinking “I don’t really want something sticky here,” a dry PTFE spray is often worth considering.

Silicone Grease

Silicone grease is designed for rubber and many plastics.

Its purpose isn’t to lubricate moving parts but to stop threaded fasteners galling, corroding or seizing together over time. That’s why it’s commonly used on stainless steel bolts, adjustment threads and other fasteners that may need to be dismantled years later.

Light Machine Oil

Sometimes grease is simply too thick.

Getting the Best Results from Any Lubricant

Choosing the right lubricant is only half the job. How you prepare the part and apply it often makes just as much difference.

Clean First, Lubricate Second

The best lubricant in the world won’t work properly if it’s applied over old, contaminated grease.

Over time, grease picks up dirt, salt, grit and tiny metal particles created through normal wear. Simply adding fresh grease on top traps that contamination where it can continue doing damage.

Before reaching for the grease, wipe away as much of the old lubricant as you can. If the part is particularly dirty, clean it properly before applying fresh grease. You’ll often find that a few extra minutes spent cleaning has more impact on the life of the part than the lubricant itself.

This is especially important on exposed fittings such as hinges, steering linkages and trailer fittings, where road dirt, salt and general grime can quickly build up.

Think of fresh grease as the final step in the job, not the first.

Removing Old Grease

Old grease often contains grit, dried salt and tiny metal particles, so simply applying fresh grease over the top is rarely a good idea.

Many boat owners use a small container of diesel or paraffin to soften and remove heavily caked grease from metal parts before cleaning them properly. It works well on dismantled parts such as winch components, steering linkages and seized fittings, but remember that whatever dissolves the grease now has to be disposed of responsibly afterwards. It’s also worth laying plenty of cardboard or absorbent pads underneath the job because the black sludge that comes off has an uncanny ability to end up everywhere except the container.

Protecting Your Hands

Grease is messy enough, but the solvents used to remove it can be even harder on your skin. Disposable nitrile gloves are useful for many maintenance jobs, but prolonged exposure to diesel, paraffin and some degreasers can eventually soften or damage them. If you’re tackling a long strip-down, expect to change gloves regularly rather than trying to make one pair last all afternoon.

Whatever you wear, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards and use a barrier or moisturising cream if you’re spending a lot of time doing maintenance. Your skin will thank you after a full day servicing winches or trailer bearings.

Have Plenty of Rags

You will always need more rags than you think.

Old cotton T-shirts, workshop wipes or paper roll disappear surprisingly quickly once grease starts coming apart. Keep one pile for wiping boat parts or fittings, another for your hands and tools, and resist the temptation to put clean parts back onto a greasy workbench. Staying organised isn’t just tidier; it also makes it much less likely you’ll contaminate freshly lubricated parts with old abrasive grease.

More Grease Isn’t Better Grease

A common mistake is assuming that if a little grease is good, a lot must be even better.

In reality, the opposite is often true.

Grease has two main jobs: to reduce friction between moving parts and to protect them from water and corrosion. Once the surfaces have a light, even coating, more grease rarely provides extra protection.

Instead, excess grease tends to collect dirt, dust, sand and salt crystals. Over time, that contamination mixes with the grease to form an abrasive paste that can increase wear rather than reduce it. It also makes maintenance messier and can hide problems such as loose fasteners, worn bushes or leaking seals during routine inspections.

A thin, even coating is usually all that’s required. Apply enough to protect the part or fitting, wipe away any excess and let the lubricant do its job.

Sometimes the Best Lubricant Isn’t Grease

A common maintenance mistake isn’t choosing the wrong grease.

It’s assuming that every moving part needs lubricating in the first place.

Many parts and fittings on a modern boat are designed to work without grease. Cutless bearings, for example, are lubricated by water. Windlass clutch cones rely on friction to grip properly, while many bearings are sealed for life and should simply be replaced when they eventually wear out.

Other parts do need lubrication, but not with grease. Winch pawls usually require a light machine oil so they can move freely, rubber seals are better protected with silicone grease, and electrical connections benefit from dielectric grease to help keep moisture and corrosion at bay.

The important lesson is that lubrication isn’t about applying grease to everything that moves. It’s about understanding how each component is designed to work and choosing the product—or sometimes no product at all—that supports that design.

Spend More When It Genuinely Buys You Something

For most boat owners, a good-quality waterproof marine grease from a reputable manufacturer will handle the vast majority of routine maintenance jobs perfectly well. Premium products can offer genuine advantages, but only if your maintenance jobs actually demand them. Better water resistance, higher load capacity and greater temperature tolerance all have their place—but many recreational boats will never ask that much of a grease.

Owners are just as positive about its performance. That enormous variety tells you something important. Owners trust it wherever smooth, low-friction movement matters more than maximum load carrying ability.

Long-term sailors describe using it on turnbuckles and stainless rigging parts and fittings for many years without problems, while others rely on it for marine fittings, trailer bearings and outboard components where a clean, stable grease that stays where it’s applied is more important than sheer tackiness. Regular readers may recognise Permatex. We first recommended it in our guide to protecting boat systems from corrosion, and for exactly the same reason: few products do a better job of preventing the kind of electrical problems that are far easier to avoid than diagnose.

One phrase keeps appearing: toolbox staple. Whether it’s being used on spark plug boots, battery terminals, trailer sockets, RV wiring, outdoor lighting or marine outboards, the recurring theme is preventative maintenance. Owners apply it as a matter of routine, confident that a thin smear during assembly will help keep moisture, salt and corrosion away from electrical connections for years to come.

Another thing owners mention is that they are often thinking about the next time the connection has to come apart. Spark plug boots separate more easily, trailer connectors are less likely to seize together and outdoor electrical fittings remain cleaner when they’re eventually taken apart again. In other words, the real benefit often isn’t noticed until months or years later, when a connection comes apart exactly as it should.

The biggest source of criticism isn’t the grease itself but misunderstanding how to use it. Several reviewers are initially surprised by the tiny tube, although most quickly realise that only a very small amount is needed. That theme runs through almost every review. Whether it’s spark plugs, exhaust manifold bolts, wheel nuts, brake hardware or engine fasteners, buyers consistently describe BTAS doing exactly what an anti-seize compound is supposed to do: preventing threads from binding together through heat, corrosion and time so future dismantling is straightforward rather than an afternoon of frustration.

Experienced owners rarely use it as a repair product. Instead, it becomes part of their assembly routine. Whenever a part or fitting is unlikely to be disturbed for several years, a light smear on clean threads is simply regarded as good practice. Reviewers also appreciate that the small tube lasts a surprisingly long time because only a thin coating is needed on each fastener.

There are very few genuine criticisms. Holt Pro-Lube is slightly unusual in this guide because it doesn’t have the huge volume of Amazon reviews behind it that some of our other recommendations enjoy. That inevitably means its numerical scores are based on a smaller sample. However, when we looked beyond Amazon at owner experience from chandlers, sailing retailers and the wider marine community, the picture was remarkably consistent.

Pro-Lube isn’t trying to replace grease. It solves a different problem altogether. Sailors repeatedly recommend it for mast tracks, batten cars, hatch runners and other sliding fittings where friction is the enemy but sticky lubricants quickly become a dirt magnet. Instead of leaving an oily coating behind, it dries to a low-friction PTFE film that allows parts to move more freely without attracting salt, dust and grit.

That clean, dry finish is what owners value most. It’s particularly useful around sails, white gelcoat and other visible areas where conventional greases can leave black marks or collect abrasive contamination over time. Several retailers also recommend it for zips, sliding hatches and other lightly loaded fittings, reinforcing its reputation as the product you reach for when you want something to slide more easily rather than carry heavy loads.

Its limitations are simply the flip side of its strengths. The dry coating gradually wears away with use and needs periodic reapplication, while heavily loaded bearings, winches and steering components still require a proper waterproof grease. Care is also needed when spraying onboard, as overspray can leave nearby deck surfaces unexpectedly slippery until cleaned away.

For boat owners, we’d see Holt Pro-Lube as a specialist rather than an everyday lubricant. It won’t replace the greases elsewhere in this guide, but it complements them perfectly. Keep it for sail tracks, hatch runners, sliding doors, locker catches and similar fittings where a clean, dry lubricant works better than a sticky one. Like the other specialist lubricants in this guide, however, it’s important to use it for the jobs it was designed to do. Although the label says “multi-purpose”, owner experience consistently shows it being used on lightly loaded mechanisms rather than bearings, winches or heavily exposed marine hardware.
