Stop Looking for the “Best” Grease
It’s tempting to think of grease as a single product that can be used almost anywhere on a boat.
In reality, that’s no different to saying there’s one “best” paintbrush or one “best” spanner. The right choice depends entirely on the job you’re doing.
A trailer wheel bearing, a battery terminal, a hatch seal and a stainless steel bolt all have completely different maintenance requirements, so it shouldn’t be surprising that they don’t all use the same product.
That’s why “What’s the best marine grease?” is only half the question.
A better one is:
What am I trying to achieve?
If you’re trying to protect a heavily loaded bearing from water and corrosion, waterproof marine grease is usually the right answer. Which Boat Lubricant Does What?
Marine Grease
If you only buy one lubricant for your boat, make it a good-quality waterproof marine grease.
It’s the general-purpose lubricant used on the majority of moving metal components around a boat, protecting against water and corrosion while reducing wear. Hinges, pivots, bearings, steering linkages and seacocks are all typical examples.
For most boat owners, this will be the lubricant they use more than any other.
PTFE Grease
PTFE grease combines conventional grease with tiny particles of PTFE, a very low-friction material that many people will recognise from PTFE thread sealing tape used on plumbing fittings. While the tape is used to seal threaded joints, PTFE grease uses the same low-friction properties to help moving parts slide more easily.
It’s a good choice when smooth operation matters more than maximum load carrying ability.
Dry PTFE Spray
Dry PTFE spray also uses PTFE, but works very differently.
Instead of leaving behind a layer of grease, it dries to leave a thin, low-friction coating that doesn’t attract dirt or dust. That’s why it’s often a better choice for locks, catches, sliding tracks and other mechanisms that would quickly become clogged if they were coated in grease.
Whenever you find yourself thinking “I don’t really want something sticky here,” a dry PTFE spray is often worth considering.
Silicone Grease
Silicone grease is designed for rubber and many plastics.
Unlike petroleum-based greases, it won’t normally cause rubber seals, O-rings and gaskets to swell or deteriorate. Instead, it helps keep them supple, prevents them sticking and makes them easier to remove during future maintenance.
If a maintenance job involves a rubber seal rather than a metal bearing, silicone grease is often the better choice. It helps preserve the seal itself, but it won’t repair damaged sealant or stop a leaking hatch or window.
Dielectric Grease
Despite what many people assume, dielectric grease isn’t there to improve an electrical connection.
In fact, it’s an electrical insulator.

Copper Anti-Seize
Copper anti-seize isn’t really a lubricant in the normal sense.
Its purpose isn’t to lubricate moving parts but to stop threaded fasteners galling, corroding or seizing together over time. That’s why it’s commonly used on stainless steel bolts, adjustment threads and other fasteners that may need to be dismantled years later.

Light Machine Oil
Sometimes grease is simply too thick.
Small spring-loaded mechanisms often rely on tiny moving parts that need to move freely, and a heavy grease can actually slow them down or stop them working properly. Light machine oil provides lubrication without restricting movement.
Winch pawls are probably the best-known example of this, and many manufacturers specifically recommend oil rather than grease for exactly this reason.
Improvisation Has Its Place
Most boat owners have improvised at some point. A squirt of washing-up liquid helps sail slugs slide into the mast. Candle wax frees a sticky drawer. A dab of engine oil quietens a squeaky hinge. Getting the Best Results from Any Lubricant
Choosing the right lubricant is only half the job. How you prepare the part and apply it often makes just as much difference.
Clean First, Lubricate Second
The best lubricant in the world won’t work properly if it’s applied over old, contaminated grease.
Over time, grease picks up dirt, salt, grit and tiny metal particles created through normal wear. Simply adding fresh grease on top traps that contamination where it can continue doing damage.
Before reaching for the grease, wipe away as much of the old lubricant as you can. If the part is particularly dirty, clean it properly before applying fresh grease. You’ll often find that a few extra minutes spent cleaning has more impact on the life of the part than the lubricant itself.
This is especially important on exposed fittings such as hinges, steering linkages and trailer fittings, where road dirt, salt and general grime can quickly build up.
Think of fresh grease as the final step in the job, not the first.
Removing Old Grease
Old grease often contains grit, dried salt and tiny metal particles, so simply applying fresh grease over the top is rarely a good idea.
Many boat owners use a small container of diesel or paraffin to soften and remove heavily caked grease from metal parts before cleaning them properly. It works well on dismantled parts such as winch components, steering linkages and seized fittings, but remember that whatever dissolves the grease now has to be disposed of responsibly afterwards. It’s also worth laying plenty of cardboard or absorbent pads underneath the job because the black sludge that comes off has an uncanny ability to end up everywhere except the container.
Protecting Your Hands
Grease is messy enough, but the solvents used to remove it can be even harder on your skin. Disposable nitrile gloves are useful for many maintenance jobs, but prolonged exposure to diesel, paraffin and some degreasers can eventually soften or damage them. If you’re tackling a long strip-down, expect to change gloves regularly rather than trying to make one pair last all afternoon.
Whatever you wear, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards and use a barrier or moisturising cream if you’re spending a lot of time doing maintenance. Your skin will thank you after a full day servicing winches or trailer bearings.
Have Plenty of Rags
You will always need more rags than you think.
Old cotton T-shirts, workshop wipes or paper roll disappear surprisingly quickly once grease starts coming apart. Keep one pile for wiping boat parts or fittings, another for your hands and tools, and resist the temptation to put clean parts back onto a greasy workbench. Staying organised isn’t just tidier; it also makes it much less likely you’ll contaminate freshly lubricated parts with old abrasive grease.
More Grease Isn’t Better Grease
A common mistake is assuming that if a little grease is good, a lot must be even better.
In reality, the opposite is often true.
Grease has two main jobs: to reduce friction between moving parts and to protect them from water and corrosion. Once the surfaces have a light, even coating, more grease rarely provides extra protection.
Instead, excess grease tends to collect dirt, dust, sand and salt crystals. Over time, that contamination mixes with the grease to form an abrasive paste that can increase wear rather than reduce it. It also makes maintenance messier and can hide problems such as loose fasteners, worn bushes or leaking seals during routine inspections.
A thin, even coating is usually all that’s required. Apply enough to protect the part or fitting, wipe away any excess and let the lubricant do its job.
Sometimes the Best Lubricant Isn’t Grease
A common maintenance mistake isn’t choosing the wrong grease.
It’s assuming that every moving part needs lubricating in the first place.
