Why Does My Water Pump Keep Running? (Boat Fresh Water Systems Explained)

You’re sitting on board when the fresh water pump runs for a couple of seconds.

Nobody has opened a tap.

A little later it happens again.

Or perhaps you’ve noticed something different. The water pressure doesn’t seem quite as good as it used to be. The pump runs for longer than normal. Maybe you’ve found a small patch of water beneath the plumbing and aren’t sure whether it’s something to worry about.

At first glance, those problems don’t seem to have much in common.

One sounds like a plumbing problem. Another makes you wonder whether the pump is failing. The damp patch beneath the plumbing might make you wonder whether you’ve got a leak somewhere.

In reality, they often begin with the same question.

How does a boat’s fresh water system actually work?

Once you understand that, many of the things that seem mysterious about a fresh water system become much easier to explain. More importantly, you become much better at deciding what deserves your attention, what can wait, and what turns out to be normal.

Like many systems on a boat, understanding comes before diagnosis.

The One Idea That Makes Everything Else Easier To Understand

Unlike a house, your boat carries its own water supply.

Somewhere on board there’s a tank holding fresh water. Somewhere else there’s a pump. Between them is a network of pipes carrying water to the galley, heads and anywhere else it’s needed.

It’s easy to think the pump waits until you turn on a tap.

It doesn’t.

Most of the time it’s doing something different.

It’s keeping the plumbing under pressure.

That might not sound important, but it’s the one idea that explains almost everything else in this article.

If you’re on your boat while reading this, see if you can find the fresh water pump.

You’ll usually find one hose arriving from the tank and another disappearing into the rest of the boat.

The moment the pump starts, it begins pushing water into that pipework.

Before long, every pipe, hose and fitting beyond the pump is full of pressurised water.

Then you close the tap.

The water stops flowing.

The pump doesn’t.

Instead, it carries on for another moment or two, building pressure inside the plumbing before switching itself off.

Nothing appears to have changed.

But something important has.

The entire system is now sitting there waiting under pressure.

The next time you open a tap, that pressure immediately pushes water towards the outlet. Only as the pressure falls does the pump start again to build it back up.

The pump isn’t deciding when to provide water. It’s maintaining pressure so water is ready when you need it.

Without the pump, the water in the plumbing behaves much like the water outside the hull. It settles at its natural level rather than continuing to flow on its own. The pump changes that by creating pressure inside the pipework. Open a tap, and that stored pressure immediately gives the water somewhere to go.

Pressure isn’t trying to force water around the boat all the time.

It’s waiting.

Until you open a tap, the pressure inside the plumbing is balanced. Nothing moves because nothing needs to.

The moment you give the water somewhere to go, that balance changes.

The pressure pushes water towards the opening, the pressure gradually falls and the pump starts again to restore it.

Once you understand that, many of the things that seem mysterious about a fresh water system become much easier to explain.

Why Does the Pump Run When Nobody Is Using Water?

Let’s go back to the question we started with.

You’re sitting on board.

Nobody has touched a tap.

Then the pump runs for a few seconds.

If the pump is designed to maintain pressure, there’s really only one thing it can be responding to.

It tells you that the pressure has fallen. It doesn’t tell you why.

Sometimes the explanation is completely normal. As hot water cools inside the calorifier, for example, the pressure can change slightly. On some boats that’s enough for the pump to run briefly before the pressure settles again.

Sometimes something has changed.

A small plumbing leak may be allowing pressure to escape.

The pump’s pressure switch may be starting to wear.

The pump itself may no longer be sealing as well as it once did.

If your boat has an accumulator tank, that may also affect how often the pump runs.

At that point you don’t know which, and there’s no need to guess.

The important point is that the pump is behaving exactly as it was designed to. It isn’t creating the problem. It’s responding to a change somewhere within the system.

The same way of thinking applies when the symptoms are different.

Perhaps the pump runs continuously.

Perhaps the water pressure has dropped.

Perhaps the flow from the shower seems weaker than it did last month.

Those symptoms may have different causes, but they all make more sense once you stop thinking about the pump as something that simply moves water and start thinking about it as something that’s trying to maintain pressure.

That’s often the difference between replacing parts and understanding the system.

Why Is There an Accumulator Tank Next to the Pump?

If you’ve ever looked around your plumbing, you may have noticed a small cylinder fitted close to the pump.

Many owners recognise it without knowing what it does.

It’s called an accumulator tank.

The easiest way to think about it is as a small store of pressure.

Inside the accumulator is a flexible diaphragm with compressed air on one side and water on the other. As the pump pressurises the plumbing, some of that water enters the accumulator and compresses the air.

That compressed air is storing energy.

If it helps, you can think of the accumulator as an air spring. The pump compresses it by squeezing the trapped air. When you open a tap, that compressed air expands again, pushing water back into the plumbing until the pressure has fallen far enough for the pump to start.

The accumulator isn’t there to make the water pass through it on the way to the taps. Instead, it’s connected to the pressurised pipework so it can store a small amount of water under pressure and release it again whenever the pressure begins to fall.

That’s why the pump doesn’t always start the instant you open a tap. The accumulator releases some of the stored water first.

Instead of the pump starting the instant you crack open a tap to rinse a toothbrush or wash your hands, the accumulator may supply that small amount of water on its own. The pump starts a little later and runs less often.

Many owners also find the water flow feels smoother because the accumulator softens the changes in pressure as the pump cycles.

Not every boat has one.

Many modern pumps are designed to work perfectly well without one. Other owners choose to fit an accumulator because they prefer the quieter operation, smoother water flow and reduced pump cycling it provides.

Most accumulator tanks can also be adjusted by changing the air pressure inside them, although the correct setting depends on the rest of the system. That’s a subject in its own right, but it’s worth knowing that the accumulator isn’t simply a sealed canister that either works or doesn’t.

The important thing for now is much simpler.

It isn’t another pump.

It isn’t another water tank.

It’s storing some of the pressure the pump has already created so the plumbing system can behave more smoothly.

Every Boat Has Its Own Normal

Once you understand how a pressurised fresh water system works, the next step is getting to know how your own system behaves.

The basic principles are the same on almost every boat. A pump builds pressure, the plumbing carries water where it’s needed and the pressure falls whenever water is used.

How that system is put together, though, can vary surprisingly widely.

Even two boats built alongside each other may no longer be identical. Pumps get replaced, filters are added and previous owners often alter the plumbing to suit the way they use the boat.

So don’t be surprised if your installation doesn’t look exactly like the diagrams in this article.

That’s perfectly normal.

One way to build that understanding is by developing a few simple routines that fit naturally into the way you use your boat.

Those routines don’t need to take long, and they’ll be different for every owner. The important thing is that they create regular opportunities to notice how your boat normally looks, sounds and behaves.

That might be a quick look in the bilge when you arrive at the boat or before locking up at the end of the day. Washing the boat after a day’s boating is another good opportunity to give the boat a general once-over while you’re already moving around it. Because you’re already moving around the whole boat, there’s usually time to notice small things. If you’re motoring for any length of time, you may also get into the habit of having a quick look in the engine compartment every so often.

None of those things takes more than a few moments, but together they gradually build a picture of what’s normal on your boat.

When something changes, you already have something to compare it with.

With a fresh water system, one of the most useful places to become familiar with is the bilge.

Many fresh water leaks eventually end up there because water follows gravity. The important word is “eventually”.

Water may collect beneath lockers, inside cupboards or behind lining panels long before it reaches the lowest part of the boat. Sometimes it only gets there after the boat has been sailing, bouncing through a chop or simply sitting for a few days.

So if you find water in the bilge, it tells you that water has reached the bilge.

It doesn’t necessarily tell you where it came from.

The next step is working backwards to where that water started its journey.

What Should You Do When Something Changes?

Sooner or later, something usually does.

The pump starts running more often than it used to.

The shower pressure seems a little weaker.

You notice a damp patch beneath the plumbing, or a little more water than usual in the bilge.

It’s natural to want an answer straight away.

But before deciding what’s wrong, ask a simpler question.

What has actually changed?

Has the pump started running every few minutes, or did you only notice it once?

Is the water pressure always lower, or only after someone has used the shower?

Has that damp patch just appeared, or could it have been there for days without you noticing?

The more clearly you understand what’s changed, the fewer possible explanations remain.

That’s often far more useful than trying to diagnose the problem immediately.

Imagine you’ve found a small patch of water beneath the plumbing.

Your eyes are naturally drawn to the nearest hose connection or hose clip. It looks like the obvious culprit.

It might be.

Before reaching for the screwdriver, spend a few minutes gathering a little more evidence.

Can you see a drip?

Is there a faint wet line running down the inside of the hull or a bulkhead from somewhere higher up?

Run a finger beneath the fittings and pipework. In awkward lockers your fingertips often tell you more than your eyes.

Only once you’ve done that is it worth trying to confirm where the water is coming from.

A small piece of toilet paper is surprisingly useful because even a tiny amount of fresh water shows up immediately.

But remember what it’s actually telling you.

It shows where fresh water first appeared.

Not necessarily where the leak started.

Water follows gravity.

If a hose connection sits directly below the real source of the leak, the toilet paper beneath that fitting will still become wet, even though the fitting itself is perfectly sound.

That’s why it’s worth looking beyond the obvious suspect.

If the inside of the hull disappears behind lining panels or continues beyond what you can easily see, place another small piece of toilet paper somewhere else you think fresh water might first appear. Comparing the two often tells you more than either one on its own.

Either way, you’ve gathered another piece of evidence before deciding where the problem actually is.

Those few extra minutes often prevent you replacing a perfectly good fitting simply because it happened to be where the water collected.

The same way of thinking applies throughout the boat.

Rather than replacing the first component that looks suspicious, gather another piece of evidence.

Notice how long the pump runs.

Notice whether it only happens after hot water has been used.

See whether the damp patch returns in exactly the same place.

Compare today with yesterday, or this weekend with the last one.

Each observation narrows the possibilities.

Sometimes you’ll discover a simple cause.

Sometimes you’ll realise the problem is becoming worse and needs attention sooner rather than later.

Either way, your next decision is based on evidence rather than assumption.

Living With a Pressurised Water System

By now, you’ve probably realised that understanding a system doesn’t just help when something goes wrong.

It also helps you decide how you want that system to work for you.

When you first buy a boat, most of its systems are simply inherited from the previous owner. Over time, though, they gradually become your systems. Not because you replace everything, but because you begin making small decisions that suit the way you use the boat.

The fresh water system is no different.

Take the fresh water pump itself.

Some owners leave it switched on whenever they’re on board. Others prefer to turn it off whenever they’re not actually using water, particularly before leaving the boat unattended.

Neither approach is right or wrong.

Someone living aboard may decide that leaving the system pressurised is the most convenient option. Someone who only uses the boat occasionally may prefer switching the pump off before locking up, knowing that even if a leak develops, the pump won’t continue trying to maintain pressure while nobody is there.

Once you understand what the pump is doing, you can decide which approach best suits the way you use your boat.

Accumulator tanks are another example.

Some boats have them. Some don’t.

A pump reaches the end of its life. A hose starts to leak. An accumulator needs attention.

Understanding the system won’t stop those things happening.

But it does make it much easier to decide whether you’re simply replacing like with like or making a deliberate change to the way you want your system to work.
